2017 News - Joe McGonigle wins Turkey Run Rally!

MJM Group Turkey Run Tarmac Stages Rally 2017 Report

On Friday the 29th December 2017 the team once again attended the annual Turkey Run Tarmac Stages Rally at the old Shackelton RAF base in Ballykelly, organised by the Maiden City Motor Club and once again sponsored by the MJM Group. All 3 of the McGeehan Motorsport Mini World Rally Cars were taking part and it was looking to be a very close battle between the crews as all 3 have shown in the past that they are capable of winning this event outright. Last years winner Derek McGeehan wasn't taking part this time but would be heavily involved in the running of all three cars to ensure that each one had the best chance of victory. In the morning the weather wasn't as bad as the forecast predicted. It was bright and dry but the stages still held a lot of standing water from the overnight rain. On stage 1 it was clear that all 3 Minis were dominating the event as there was a McGeehan 1-2-3 at the top of the timesheets. And after the 2nd stage, the team still held 1st, 2nd and 3rd places overall

Joe McGonigle from Muff in County Donegal went on to set the fastest stage times on the first 5 of the 6 special stages. Joe and co-driver Ciaran Geaney had led the event from start to finish finally winning the event by 18 seconds. This showed that Joe was able to go one better than his result last year after finishing 2nd overall in his own Skoda Fabia R5 also run by the McGeehan Motorsport Team. We look forward to seeing what Joe can achieve in 2018.

Alan McGeehan and Arthur Kierans started the day in third overall and even though that was an excellent start to the day, Alan knew from winning at Shackelton before that he could do much better. Unfortunately, after experimenting with new and untested tyre choices, the gamble didn't pay off and they dropped to fifth overall. In service, the team refitted the car with new tyres and Alan was able to set a cracking time on the last stage to climb back up the leaderboard to finish 4th overall.

Alan Carmichael and Trevor McCaw once again took to the wheel of the Right-Hand Drive Mini WRC and straight away from the first stage they set a 2nd fastest time overall, only 1 second behind Joe McGonigle. Even though the weather was changing and getting worse as the day went on, they showed great pace and held that 2nd place going into the last stage. Unfortunately, a small mistake on the final stage where they slid wide on one of the corners and got stuck in the grass meant they lost over a minute and dropped to 7th overall. Both Alan and Trevor commented that they had really enjoyed the battle with Joe all day but it was just a shame that a bit of bad luck at the end was to decide their rally result.

McGeehan Motorsport would like to thank the team at Maiden City Motor Club and everyone who helped out on the day for a fantastic clubman event as always, our customers for their support and the service crew for their hard work and long hours. Also, thanks to David Harrigan for the photos and we look forward to seeing everyone again at the next one!
